In the United States of America, there are two localities with the same name – Portland. Both of them are attractive and interesting in their own way, but, despite this, the city located in the west of the country in the state district of Oregon deserves special attention. The first thing that catches your eye is the amazing view of the locals. Here you can meet men with blue beards, passers-by dressed in old costumes, cyclists without clothes and other interesting characters. In addition to the eccentric townspeople, Portland boasts numerous attractions that have survived from ancient times, as well as treat guests to delicious beer.
One of the most visited places in the city is the Oregon Zoo, which is one of the oldest animal parks. It is located in the historic Washington Park, which also houses an arboretum and a Japanese garden. On the territory of the “green cloister” there is a small railway, on which little travelers love to ride. The zoo was opened in the eighty-eighth year of the nineteenth century. Initially, only one animal lived here – the Grizzly bear, which was taken under the care of local pharmacists. Soon the zoo began to grow rapidly and occupied almost half of the park territory.
Another heavenly place worth visiting while traveling in Portland is a Chinese garden called Lan Su. Its territory is surrounded by high walls on all sides. The opening of the garden took place in the year of the Millennium celebration. The total area of green spaces is about four thousand square meters. The rock mass weighing five hundred tons and the building stone were brought from China from Lake Taihu. Most of the plants, as well as building materials, were brought from the Chinese state. Many of them are more than a hundred years old. The main highlight of Lan Su is Lake Ziter, created by local workers.
Do you want to find yourself in a real pink paradise? Portland is sometimes called the city of roses. And he got this name for a reason. There is a world famous rose garden where exotic Portland flowers are grown. From May to October, local breeders develop new varieties of these plants, mixing one species with another. In the blooming paradise, about seven thousand various bushes have been collected, the varietal number of which is five hundred and fifty pieces. Every year, in the first summer month, a festival is held in the city, where participants are new varieties of royal flowers. By agreement of the jury, the “queen” is selected from all copies.
