The Austrian naturopath and researcher Franz Xavier Mayer (1875–1965) developed a course of dietary treatment in the early twentieth century. His research has helped to find a link between the digestive system and chronic diseases of other organs. What is the point?
Dr. Mayer viewed the body as a single system that, under favorable conditions, is capable of self-regulation and self-healing. He called the digestive system the main one in the body, and the small intestine – the most important organ that participates in the production of neurotransmitters and hormones (histamine, serotonin and others), as well as controls the work of the whole organism. It is here that the processes of digestion, assimilation and delivery of nutrients to the cells, as well as the excretion of vital products from the body. Intestinal contamination contributes to intoxication of the whole organism and can be a trigger for many diseases: obesity, gastritis, cholecystitis, pancreatitis, diabetes, impotence, depression, sleep disorders, migraines.
Mayer paid special attention to the composition of the microflora. The fact is that bacteria inside the intestine form and protect the mucous membrane on the intestinal wall, produce enzymes and participate in the digestive process, can affect the psycho-emotional state. The intestine is an ideal environment for the development and reproduction of microorganisms. Dr. Mayer’s therapy is based on cleansing the intestines of accumulated toxins and toxins, as well as resting the digestive system and the whole body. Rest is the rejection of heavy, fatty, unhealthy foods to allow the intestines to reboot. Purification – removal of toxins, toxins and carcinogens from the body. For this purpose, use herbal teas, saline solutions and drink plenty of mineral water.
Training – the formation of healthy habits and the transition to a proper diet. Mayer formulated several rules that will help restart the work of the stomach and intestines:
Drink plenty of water throughout the day
It is important to observe water balance. However, Dr. Mayer advised limiting water intake to (30 minutes) and after meals (no earlier than 1.5 hours).
Refuse snacks
The doctor recommended to refuse snacks between lunch and dinner and to make a choice in favor of high-grade, but rare meals. Three times is enough to feel full.
Chew food carefully
Remember as a child we were told to make at least 30 chewing movements before swallowing a piece. So this is Mayer’s development.
Do not eat food high in fiber in the evening
The doctor advised to consume fiber in the morning or afternoon due to reduced enzyme activity of the gastrointestinal tract in the evening and at night.
