Iron has many functions on which women’s (and not only) health depends. This mineral is involved in many biological processes and primarily in the transfer of oxygen to tissues and muscles. It is necessary for energy production, normal functioning of the immune system, and also for mental development.

Iron deficiency in severe cases can lead to anemia, which is a consequence of a decrease in the concentration of hemoglobin in the blood. But its excess is fraught with consequences in the form of the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and some cancers.

How does iron deficiency manifest itself in the body?

Fatigue and shortness of breath. This is because oxygen does not enter all organs and tissues. In this case, the heartbeat increases to distill more oxygen-enriched blood – this causes a decline in strength.

Paleness. Hemoglobin in the cells gives the blood a red color. That is why with iron deficiency the skin loses a healthy pink color. But paleness can be noticed not only on the skin. Even gums and lips can lose color.

Headaches and dizziness. Low hemoglobin means that an important organ such as the brain is deficient in oxygen. As a result, blood vessels in the brain swell, causing pressure and headaches. Dry hair and skin. A person’s appearance also suffers from a lack of oxygen. This can be manifested by hair loss and skin problems, the appearance of deep wrinkles, brittle nails.

How to increase iron levels?

Alas, but the body cannot synthesize iron on its own. He can get this mineral only with food. The best sources of iron among foods are red meat, offal and fish. In second place – dairy products, as well as plant foods: lentils, green peas, parsley, beans, spinach, oatmeal, almonds, durum wheat flour.

In addition, iron contains foods rich in vitamin C. These are citrus fruits, kiwi, red berries, sweet peppers, cabbage, orange juice. At the same time consider: replenishment of stocks of iron has to be carried out under the control of the doctor.
